SandRock

Post by Josephine »

has anyone been to Sandrock? do you have any beta?

i'm going to AL for business and I wanted to climb a bit. I can't find anything other than a bouldering guide online. i know that all the cool kids boulder, but i'm looking for sport. preferably EASY sport (.10 and under). any walls/routes you'd recommend?

i'm also interested to know if there is anyplace for car-camping and how safe is it? i figure there's always a walmart somewhere if it comes down to it - but i'd rather not!

i'm leaving this friday, and am hoping to climb part of sat and sunday

I've been to sandrock, its REALLY BAD. There are some short sport routes, nothing listed online. The place is littered w/ graffiti and broken beer bottles. The bouldering is most definitely worse than the sport routes. Go to HP40, or Rocktown.
Today I quit my job. And then I told my boss to go fuck himself, and then I blackmailed him for almost sixty thousand dollars. Pass the asparagus.

I've actually done some great sport lines at Sandrock in the 5.11 range. There's even one of the best roof cracks in America there (Champagne Jam). Send a PM to Power2U. He knows that place pretty well.

Thats one of the places I learned to climb. Its good - easy access. You can walk around on top of alot of the routes and set top-ropes pretty easy too. I really loved it back when I was starting climbing. Camping is good. Especially if you don't mind hearing ACDC all night from the next camp over. Sun wall, if I remember correctly has some good 10's. The guide books are: "Dixie Cragger" and the older version "the Deep South Climbers Guide". I have the Deep South... if you want you can borrow it. Its a dry county which is one of the reasons for the grafitti. Kids hang out and get drunk out of view of the authorities. You should go ... have fun!

Sand Rock is fun... ditto the easy access for setting up TRs and loads of V0- bouldering.. plenty of easy trad and a few easy sport routes as well, fun place to hang, climb and camp. Easy access from the expressway and some inexpensive hotels near the lake as well as restaurants. Worthy of a visit if you're in the area, it was a fail safe in the past for us when TN wall would have the hunting closures.
