I am not sure if anyone actually watched the presidential address last night but personally I found it to be one of the most enfuriating specticals I have ever witnessed and my poor girlfriend had to sit through my own personal 2 inutes of hate.
Why was it so enfuriating, at first I wasn't sure, but I quickly realized that it was because it was the first time I actually found myslef agreeing with 'ol dubya. aaahhh.
I have been anti-war from the start, but unfortunatly I am more pro-America than I am anti-war. At this point, to just leave would show a great sign of weakness to the world and our enimies (and thanks to the war, the number of our enimies has probably grown exponentially), not to mention giving our enimies an ungoverned breeding ground to stratagize and unite. Wait, did I say unite, they would only unite after the unimaginable genocide wich would proceed in the months after our retreat. So in short, we must send in troops, and I must agree with evil, even though it is for different reasons. And what pisses me off the most is that the limey bstrd won. He wormmed his way in there made billions for a few select Americans who contracted out there work to mercinaries, and now the people are forced to swallow their pride and deal with this mess.
Sorry about the rant.
presidential address
I had little trouble agreeing we should attack Afghanistan. It was even done pretty well and continues, despite neglect from this administration, to be a relative success. But then, despite the fact that the people of this country were split evenly about doing it, we invaded Iraq. We need a government based on consensus, ruled from the bottom up, not an imperial Presidency ruling from on high. Defending against terrorism needs to be treated more as law enforcement than military action. Sure, use special forces to go in and take out people like Osama Bin Laden, and if you have to, like with Afghanistan, take out the government that is shielding them. But for Pete's sake, when you're this deep in shit, get out of the pit.
I don't agree with the premise that Iraq will devolve any further than it already has if we leave. If you take out American targets you only have Iraquis left and they'll turn, collectively, against the foreigners (Al Quaeda) that are killing their neighbors. I've got high hopes that the Sunnis and Shi'ah would settle their differences inside Iraq pretty quickly and with a rapidly decreasing amount of bloodshed (as compared with now). I do think we would not have a close allie in the resulting Iraqi government but I also think they would be a better friend than Saddam was.
Bush's speech just reminded me of how stupid that man is. He believes he is right so he blunders ahead regardless of what the rest of us Americans want. Or, and this is really cynical, he wants to keep this thing going so that the next President will be the one stuck with retreating from battle. Bush is not a man, he is a useless rich fratboy.

weak sauce..watching an unranked team blow away a lesser team is more important than engaging in the most important speech of this President's life? If you care about the country, and want to bitch about the war, you better be in tune with what W said...charlie wrote:Except for a minor interruption.dmw wrote:anyone watch the basketball game?
