Ok, so I am studying in the Chem-Phys library at UK and need a break so I jump on one of the computers and log on here. While I am waiting for the page to load, I look down at the new Dell they just put in and it has a floppy drive. Not a Zip drive, a floppy. Do people still use these things? I don't know why I am asking this, the physics guys still have Apple IIc's running in the basement next to the particle accelerator.

It's just a sign of how badly UK needs money. Ten years without all that money from a bowl game...it's hard. They've had to make cuts, especially in software. I hear next year they might upgrade to Windows 3.1!

I don't know Bram, I think Zip drives are about as obsolete as floppy disks. I thought everyone had those little memory sticks that connect directly to the USB port.

I haven't touched a floppy disk in years!

(erm.... things better written out than said quickly in a noisy room....)

Out of the 9 functioning machines in my office, only one or two have floppy drives. Good riddance - I always hated floppys anyway.

I consider ZIP obsolete also, but they are newer than floppy drives. On the plus side, the mouse had the forward and back buttons on the side and that's the first computer I have been on at UK to have that feature on the mouse. Every time I am on a computer at UK, I go try to hit those buttons and realize they aren't there.

so all you young whiners still complaining about floppies...are ye old enough to have used the true 5 1/4" floppies? sadly, I am.

as you know, technology is evolving at a pretty fast pace right now, and there is little point for a large company or university to try and stay on top of it all. besides, I vote that we were better off, for the most part, before cell phones and PC's became standard issue. do we really need a phone stuck to our ear in the groceery store. my god, what in the world did we buy before we could call home to ask? oh, you mean we actually made a decision on our own?

I'd never want to go back pre PC's, but I can tell you the world revolved and operated just fine before mpeg, dram, floppies, ipods, headsets, and picture phones invaded.

so suck it up boys, and go buy a pack of floppies for old times sake.
