Gimme beta on harness

Post by ecp88 »

OK - I need a new harness. I gave my Petzl corax away - the loops were located on... well my back. I rack up with my cams and stoppers on a shoulder harness and my trad draws on my harness. Anyone have a recommendation for me to narrow the search? Pros/cons? I'm asking because I'm a one year old noob and you know better.

if you're a woman like me w/hips - i would definitely think about a women's-specific. also - TRY them on. all of them. where ever you go - make the sales person work for their money. go for comfort. that's my $.02

Any of the Misty Mountain harnesses are great. I think the cadilac is the best one. All the harnesses I tried seem to have the loops too far to the back. I just quit using the back ones and hang the slings around a shoulder. I think some suspenders for my harness would be sweet. all that big gear is heavy.

I have several friends who own Misty Mountain Cadillacs and they LOVE them. Well padded and tons of space for gear. I have a Corax so I feel your pain. Its a good harness, but the gear loops suck. Its a great harness for sport, but trad? Not so much.

I also agree with what Josie said, make sure you try on your harness before you buy it. Even better, try to hang in it before you buy. Adjust all the straps and don't forget to properly adjust the risers in the back. Really get a feel for the comfort of the harness when it's weighted.

I own the Cadillac. I like it quite well. But, its loops are a little back there too. Best thing about it is the extra gear loops, where you can stash your locking biner or nut tool, and it never gets in the way. The padding is comfy for about a year, then seems to wear out. May not bean issue for most, it just depends on how long you are belaying. After 20 minute of hangtime, even the Cadillac hurts my hips. But, I've found tying off to a tree helps this. Also, the Cadillac is cumbersome to take on and off.

Avoid the BD bod, I wore one for five years and I think it did permanent damage. No belay loop, which sucks. But, its nice in the winter because it is super easy to put on.

Best advice: Try them out!
Oh, yeah, and rack on your harness! Slings suck!

Check out Yates too.

misty cadillac is the best sport/trad harness on the market.
Oh man, he is messing that up. However, he is missing his left leg so that way would probably be harder for him. SCIN, just before spraying some beta for a climber doing a route the WRONG way.

My BD Chaos has been comfortable through 4 years of consistent indoor/outdoor use. I'll probably get the same thing for my next harness.

Thanks for the info - the Cadillac seems to be available only mail order, but with the overwhelming support it's worth a try. Most local gear shops seem to be BD drones so the internet search is on!
