Victim Fell About 20 Feet

BARABOO, Wis. -- A Waukesha man fell 20 feet to his death at Devil's Lake this weekend.

The 24-year-old man and his girlfriend were rock climbing Saturday afternoon when the man fell from the Park's East bluff, WISC-TV reported.

Park officials said that the victim was on a rock wall face when he fell about 20 feet landing on his head and back.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, WISC-TV reported.

Another man was seriously injured earlier this year when he fell from a rock wall after park hours.

Devil's Lake is located just south of Baraboo.

Inexperienced climber falls to his death

A 24-year old Waukesha man died at Devil's Lake State Park Saturday
afternoon after he fell while climbing in a non-designated area on the
park's East Bluff. According to the Baraboo District Ambulance Service,
Kevin Gaynor fell from an undetermined height while climbing with another
person at about 4:30 p.m., about a third of a mile from a North Shore
parking lot.

District Public Information Officer Capt. Kristine Snow said the two were
inexperienced climbers and had no climbing gear. Members of the Rope Rescue
Division — comprised of fire departments from Baraboo, Merrimac and Prairie
du Sac — responded to the call, where they found Gaynor unconscious, not
breathing and without a pulse. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

District Deputy Director Jay Singleton said rescue team members offered
condolences to Gaynor's family and reminded climbers and hikers about the
dangers in undesignated areas of the park. Steve Schmelzer, assistant park
superintendent, said the death is the only fatality at the park this year.
