Anyone who doesn't live near the Red knows the aggravaition and commitment it takes to climb there regulary. And I am fed up with the drive. I'm down there a least every other weekend, and the commute from Cincy is getting old along with expensive. So on a lighter note has anyone relocated their family just to climb. Any suggestions.
This is somthing my wife and I have been discussing for quite some time now, but was going to wait for the kidds to grow up and move out, but 13 more years isn't going to work.
All the details such as finding jobs, buying a house, school ect is overwelling I'm not sure where to even begin.

Plenty of people drive from Indy (4 hours) every weekend.

Well, can you make enough in Stanton or are we talking Mt Sterling, Winchester, or Lexington? Wouldn't finding jobs for you and your wife come first?

Yes, Kirker, in case you weren't aware, we now measure how much you care about climbing in how far you drive to get to the Red * how often you visit * how many years you've been visiting. Better stay in Cincy lest you be blackballed as uncommitted to the sport!

Find a job first. the rest will fall into place.

So has anyone made this move. The decision isn't a question of if but rather when. Its been a long term goal to move closer to the Red, recently we feel the desire to make the move sooner than later, but not exactly sure of any thrieving communites beside Lexington that would support our needs. My wife and I have jobs that would allow pretty easy relocation. So besides the question of experience are there any other large communites around the Red (less than 45min drive) beside Lexington.

i moved out of my house in chicago and into my car initially to climb at the red.(i was sick of the 8 hour drive each way). however I didn't have a family in tow.

Having a job lined up before you move somewhere does seem like the pre-requisite for moving somewhere. And being in cincy you should be able to get to interviews in lex easier.

Matt and Amy moved from lex to stanton to be closer to the red a few years back but then they just had to commute an hour to work everyday. you should ask them but i think in the end they thought it wasn't worth it becuase it was dark most of the time when they got back to the house.

Nearly all of my relocations have had something to do with climbing.

Just pick your favorite climbing area's and then look for jobs near by.

I can't think of any towns between lexington and the red that I'd want to live in, but you could easily get a house outside of lexington towards the red. This would give you a 20 minute commute to most places in lexington, and only about a 45 minute drive to the red.

Yeah! Us nut jobs from Chicago who drive 7-8 hours REALLY care about climbing! (But then, there are the total psychos who drive from Wisconsin or Toronto...)

But seriously, I love the Red, but if you're looking at moving your family for climbing, have you considered somewhere with even more climbing like Colorado, Las Vegas or the like?

It's like this; don't look back in a few years and wish you had made the move.

I'm 2.5 hours away from the Red. My daughter lives in Richmond. She and her husband work in Lexington, and I spend the night with them sometime because they are only 45 minutes from the Red. They are only 20 minutes from work, and like living on the outskirts of Richmond.

Your children will be okay with a move. I went to 32 grade schools....okay, bad example, but I'm not totally crazy.

If you have the opportunity, make each day of your life as happy as you can. If climbing does that for you, move closer to the climbing. You can always move back!
