Snakes and Wasps

Post by absolutsugarsmurf »

I'm looking to climb at both the Fortress and Global/Emerald next week. I thought anyone who has been to either recently could give me some info on snakes or wasps at both. I remember fortress being a giant wasp colony and hearing of a snake pit at lady slipper. Any news is appreciated.

Wasp nest about one foot under the anchors of Blue Runner in a crack - nasty little suckers. Bees nest at the top of Calypso I. I heard that the copperheads were back at the Turret this summer. There are also some resident copperheads around the base of Father &b Son / Vision at Global.

Global village is not really a snake pit..but the climbs mentioned above are all around boulders and talus. Thre snakes (copperheads) are suprisiingly docile there..I got about inch from one and it did not move!

Just discovered a new wasp nest in a oft-used pocket between the ground and first bolt on "Send Me on My Way" in Rebel Camp Hollow. Had to leave KY at noon today and was not able to spray this nest. Anyone going down there can find a can of wasp spray near the left door of the Muir Maintenance Bldg. at the Main Parking Lot. Feel free to borrow it.

Theres a wasp nest full of wasps in the big crack facing you as you get to the first belay ledge of Horny B*tch. I heard them rattle the nest as soon as I stood up.

Near Kentuck Pinstripe there were four copperheads spread around the belay area - all pretty docile, but I would still be very careful where you throw down your gear and keep your crag dog on tight leash! I climbed this route about four weeks ago.
Also, climbed Send Me on My Way last weekend -the wasp nest was easy to see - this route can be climbed easily to the right avoiding the jug hole with the nest all together. Thanks to Liz Weber for offering the spray!
