What would you have done?

So are most climbers such utter bastards that they would walk past a dying man to summit Everest rather than help save him?

You should be ready to die when you climb Everest. Sometimes trying to get someone down will be a risk to your life. Considering how much time, money and waiting for a window to summit goes into getting to the top I am not suprised no one helped him. He didn't seem to be expecting help so maybe he came to that understanding. I am suprised that his guides left him though. He must have gotten some third rate guides or used a coupon.

Daniel Mazur is a man of true honor! He is definitely a breath of fresh air in an apparently self centered world. I believe we human beings have a responsiblity to preserve human life at the expense of your personal desire whenever possible, especially under such circumstances. Summiting Everest is not an individual endeavor it takes a team of climbers. It's one thing to preserve your life first, but to ignore a person obviously in need to satisfy your personal ego, give me a break. Our ethical responsibility is that which was done by Mazur. Adopting that attitude would do alot for the image of the climbing community.

People piss and moan on this board about vandelism and trash at the gorge and then make some BS comment like "walrus". I'd have thought better from this forum.

Thanks for the post Alan, a great topic with real value!

I would have at least pilfered the guys wallet rather than just rudely ignoring him while trudging past.

I would certainly not try to step on the guy as I passed him.

There's absolutely no rule that says that climbers can't have their quota of assholes. Some would say they have more than their fair share.

I just wonder what any of us would have done. I wonder what I would have done. I would like to think that I would have done all I can to save his life. But I do a million selfish things a day, and I have never been in a situation on a mountain to save someones life. So I try to refrain from railing on those who passed by. Was it wrong of them? I believe so. However, none of us truly know how we will react until we are in that situation, it is amazing how often we convince ourselves to do the wrong thing out of fear and selfishness. So I say cheers to Daniel Mazur who had the right outlook and hope we would do the same as him.

But that's the point! Just roll around in all that smug, self-serving selfrighteousness. It feels SOOOO good!

OB Juan, you have got to think before posting stuff like this. If you truly beleived this, then you would say that no one should be on the mountain to start with....
