I have been backpacking for most of my life but now i would like to try something a lilttle different (climbing)I was wondering if anyone could tell me some classes I could take around the Red or lexington. Also i was wondering if anyone had an estimation as to how much it would cost to get started.

JB teaches climbing classes at Eastern in Richmond... Like a real college PE classes, if you enroll at EKU....
To get started you need:
1-2 Harness(es) $30-100+
1 Rope $90-150+
1 Shoes $50-150+
10 Draws $7-20 each so $75-200 for ten
1 Belay Device $15-80
1 Locking Biner $10-20
Taking a class is definitly the best way to get started. Most people start learning the ropes from a friend whose a climber. This is alot cheaper as they usually let you use their gear (except shoes) until you have an idea what your doing. Usually people get roped into this by belay hungry climbers... Then they catch the bug or not... Good luck! Have Fun! Its a great sport!

If you need gear, there are some awsome package deals for beginner climbers online. I got my harness, locking carabiner, belay device, chalk and a chalk bag for less than $60, including shipping. That's pretty much all you need to get started, besides shoes. Everything else can wait till you have a little more expirience. Good luck.

you probably ought to find a place to live before you start a new hobby.

I am also newly interested in climbing and was wondering if you would share some good places to buy gear.
