Earthquake!!!

Post by xrtrady1 »

My partner sean and I were walking up to skybridge when we were both stopped in our tracks by a loud bang and the ground shook. Earthquake style!! It was on Thurs. Feb 14 06. I was wandering if anybody else heard this or witnessed anything?

It was most likely rockfall. My wife and I have experienced it twice while hiking in the gorge.

I got back from Looking Glass the weekend before and it snowed like crazy. Huge slabs of ice were falling all around us on then North Face. It was nothing like this. If it was rockfall it shook the ground and made the sound as if Eagle Point came down. No bullshit!! I looked on USGS sight and it showed the last recorded earthquake was 15 or so miles NE of Winchester on Sept. 15 05. There were also 3 cars parked at Eagle Point pulloff.

Look out! The New Madrid could go at any second!!

http://www.scchealth.org/docs/ems/docs/ ... adrid.html

THE HIGHEST EARTHQUAKE RISK in the UNITED STATES outside the West Coast is along the New Madrid Fault. Damaging tremors are not as frequent as in California, but when they occur, the destruction covers over more than 20 times the area because of underlying geology.

THE GREAT NEW MADRID EARTHQUAKE OF 1811-1812 was actually a series of over 2000 shocks in five months, five of which were 8.0 or more in magnitude. Eighteen of these rang church bells on the Eastern seaboard.

it also created Reelfoot Lake- witnesses reported that the land was rolling like waves several feet high, the animals were seen prior to the quake walking out of the woods- prey and predator took a time-out

I'd go with rock or ice fall. The USGS keep a pretty good eye on the ground shaking. I'd say if they didn't report a quake there wasn't one.
I see they are still lopping off mountains in Eastern Kentucky. Electricity isn't cheap.

yeah i would definatly say it was rock/ice fall, the USGS can see if a moose farts in Canada on the seismos. gotta love some mass wasting though, i was in muir not to long ago and it sounded like something BIG came down in the valley.

Artillery. Has to be. Only thing you can do is run and hope they don't have you dialed in. Bad way to go.
