And a special thanks goes out to all those "well intentioned" individuals who have fought to close the mental institutions and "integrate" these wack-a-nuts into society. It seems they think that the nuts can live productive lives and "heal" faster if they part of the "normal" world instead of being locked up.

I see their theory is working well......

and by my definition, you are completely out of touch with society and can't get along with humanity. so i'm going to lock your ass up and throw away the key while feeding you drugs that incapacitate you and make you loose bodily control.

oh, and all those rights in the first ten amendments suddenly don't apply to you because, well, because i think you're crazy and can't understand/apply them. and maybe we'll bring back the transorbital labotomy for you.. sound like good plan?

go get a clue..

yep....sounds like an excellent plan paul....we let em all out, and they vote democratic anyway, so they can get free handouts. I'd rather control their handouts.

fine, here's what you get then..

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... Id=5014080

who decides who's crazy? you? me? ha! give me a break.. half of the liberals and half of the conservatives are crazy.. and the rest of us aren't "crazy".. why? cause there's more of us.. if that's how we base human rights policies then lock me up because i'm fucking nuts..

i'd love for people to see a list of people that have really done something for the world that were "crazy".. more than all us lazy asses put together.

you know one thing i held myself back from saying in my original post: a lot of her arguments sound like the arguments for religion. and yet, the billions of jews, christians, muslims, hindus, SCIENTOLIGISTS, aren't considered crazy, you calling for them to be locked up..

if we're going to go back to the eighteen hundreds, don't hold back: let's lock up all the mutes, deaf, blind, paralyzed, sad, quiet, gays, rebels, blacks, whites that like blacks, women on their period, the uneducated, the physically deformed, and anyone else who generally disagrees or is different than us..

..cfdpiper, i think i'll start with you. i'll start with the lobotomy, heavy antidepressants like lithium and a strong tca, then strap you down in a windowless room for most of the day so you can piss and shit on yourself.. after a month, if you're not acting crazy, i'll let you out.

oh, and i'll define "crazy" by whatever criteria i choose on that thirtieth day..

like i said before, get a fucking clue

Wack-A-Nuts

Mr. Paul3eb,

Let me be the first to inform you that you don't know the first thing about modern-day mental health care (I can tell by reading your posts). Have you ever heard of a Group Home? You probably haven't. They are residential homes where many of the wack-a-nuts go after they leave the "hospital". You can find them in just about any neighborhood in America. Unfortunately, you tend to find more of them in the inner-city areas. There is no governing body that regulates the homes (on a consistent basis), and there are no restrictions that on where they can be located.

When these folks are in the "hospital" they are supervised, take their medications on a regular basis, and get the counseling they need. In other words, they are normal when they are in this setting. The Judge and their Shrink deem them "safe" to enter society, and they are sent to a group home. In the group home, they are not supervised, don't take their meds, and have a "case worker" who may see them once every week or two. This is when they go haywire and become a burden on the public safety services and a threat to themselves and others. The process to get them probated (sent back to the hospital) usually takes several months, all the while they continue to remain a burden by their actions.

I can speak for the Cincinnati area, there are more beds available in group homes than there are in the mental institutions. Group homes are generally 2-family and 4-family dwellings owned by a private individual (a.k.a. slumlord, because the are making a profit by providing marginal facilities), but more and more we are starting to see the public housing authorties get into the business. The owners are paid by the government to house and provide 1, sometimes 2 meals a day to these "residents". That is all. No supervision required. Only the worst of the worst are sent to UC or Summit (the two mental institutions) due to the availability of beds. Folks who are borderline get to stay on the "outside".

As a public safety services provider, I am usually sent to a group home a least a couple times each shift for a "problem". Problems like: calling 911 because they are hungry, calling 911 because they are hearing voices, suicide attempts, successful suicides, assaults (resident on resident), stabbings, public displays of nudity, alcohol abuse, fist-fighting vehicles in traffic, etc. I have personally been assaulted at group homes, and even had one "resident" walk in to our firehouse with a knife (from the group home next door). Often, these "residents" walk-away from the home and it goes unreported for days (a.k.a. they become the homeless folks on the streets). Why does it go unreported, you ask? BECAUSE THERE IS NO SUPERVISION!

This is why I thank the powers that be for assimilating our mentally ill (a.k.a. wack-a-nuts) into society instead of keeping them in a hospital where they (and us) are safe.

If you doubt what I am saying, contact you local mental health board, find out where the nearest group home is, and spend a week there. Maybe a dose of the "real world of mental health" will help educate you (since NPR isn't doing a good enough job). Until then, only comment about what you know about. To do otherwise would make you CRAZY.

P.S. - I think I have a clue....
