COME ON!!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Does it distract or encourage you when people scream motivational words at you? It totally breaks my concentration

I didn't vote because my vote is that I mostly like it but it's not something I need to make me climb better. Also, there are different kinds of cheering...some is annoying (beta spewing) but most is a good thing. Overall, I get kinda psyched when me friends are cheering me on. It gets me fired up when I'm doing something hard.

If Jared yells "GO BIG, GO BIG!!" at me one more time, I'm gonna trundle a boulder on 'im!

Seriously, I also like encouragement... even when J-Rock lies through his teeth.

I like to hear my belayer and only my belayer talking to me... Not encouraging, but helping me focus... i.e. "keep breathing"... "stay focused" etc. I sometimes hear other people, but I'd rather not... even if it is positive.

What distracts me is: barking dogs, smoking, and hearing someone talking to my belayer.

Smoking is the worse, though. When I'm up on a route trying to get my breath back and someone's smoke is making me choke, it takes everything I have not to be a bitch and ask them to put their cigarette out. (note: I smoked for 13 years so I'm a complete hippocrite)

I like calm encouragement, I get distracted when people bark at me. The best is when I'm feeling rough or sketchy and my belayer says "I'm with you." It just calms me.

I don't like to hear anything. If I am focused enough I don't hear anything, even if there is noise. If I am not as focused as I should be, beta and encouragement do not help.

A friendly "I'm with you" from the belayer right when I am entering the crux is awesome. let's me know they know where I am at.

Cheering from the peanut gallery is a distraction, And unwarranted beta is bad karma for the sprayer. (Yes, we all know you have sent this POS...you subtle sprayed it 4 times already.)

I voted no, hoever, there are two exceptions

1) motivational yelling is OK if it only happens at the right time. Someone shouting "you got this, stay on it" when you are cruising the 5.8 section usually makes me think "zip it!"

2) Chick power

I don't always like "come on you can do it" but my belayer talking to me does keep me calm. There have certainly been time were I am struggling and I say "I can't do it" all the sudden five voices at the bottom scream "NO" or "come on" and it has pushed me to get my best red-points.
It might look like I'm doing nothing, but at the cellular level I'm really quite busy
