Netscape vs MS Internet Explorer

I gotta a problem, I hate using MS Internet Explorer. No real reason other than the less stuff created by Bill Gates I use, the less I feel that I am contributing to the Microsoft world take-over.

So my problem is that when using Netscape I sometimes have to scroll horizontally. I don't like having to scroll horizontally. Vertical scrolling to read web pages i can handle, but having to do both just plain sucks. Can you make it where Netscape users don't have to scroll horizontally to read pages?

Our PCs at work have Explorer on them and never notice the widder pages until I come home and try to use Netscape. I figgured there was a way to make the site compatible with both. If you can figure that out sometime that would be waaaaaay cool.

steve,

the only problem is that netscape is owned by aol/time/warner/everythingothermedia.

so it is like choosing between two evils. while steve case is not as notorius as billy he is probably more evil.

if you want to support the small guy check out opera. I know you can view this site in it but i haven't bothered trying to post using it.

Since MS Internet Explorer and Netscape are both free applications, does it really matter which one you use? It's not like the big baddies are making any money off of you, is it?

Don't get me started about media conglomerates...I work for one. Corporate wise not as big as an AOL/Time Warner thing, but affilliate wise I'm slavin' away for the mouse. I guess it all boils down to my personal preferance which is Netscape. It is what was on the computers in the library computer labs back in 1994 when I discovered this damn world wide web hooey.

actually they probably are making money off of you indirectly. marketshare has a direct correlation to stock price and to advertisement rates and they both use their platforms as marketing tools in of themselves.

Do you think that two giant money grubbing corporations are giving away browsers for free from the goodness of their hearts?

Exactly Merrick, nothing is free. Although when I bought my pc at gateway they didn't 'charge' me any extra for Netscape or Exploere, but I'm sure I 'paid' for it somewhere or another.

well there's actually no cost out of your pocket for these applications if you want to get technical, since you can download them for free as well as upgrade them for free. Of course market share makes them money, but I'm not sure which company I would prefer to withhold my little piece of the market share from.. What it really should come down to is: which do you like better?

from a web developers perspective the newer versions of both are fine since they both made a big effort to be standards compliant. as long as you are using NN6.1 or up and IE 5.0 and up people are building sites for you.

if for some reason you are still using a version of Netscape 4, please for the love of god, upgrade to a new browser. nobody is developing for NN4.x anymore becuase it is so buggy that it takes tons and tons of time to make pages work on it. so your experience on the internet is just gong to degrade over time as more and more pages load incorrectly in the browser.

whew, sorry pet peeve.
