Two Muir Routes closed

Post by weber »

Due to the unsafe rock qulity, the trad route, "Black Tide", 5.6R in the Lower Tantroft Hollow in Muir Valley is permanently closed. The rock near the top of this climb is loose, friable, soft, and just plain crap.

Also, "The Universe Next Door", 5.8R, also in the Lower Tantroft Hollow of Muir Valley is temporarily closed until a bolt or bolts are put in to provide adequate protection. It can be a nice mixed route, but due to the absence of good places to stick pro, it currently has an "R" rating. Do not climb this route until further notice.

Because Muir Valley is operating under the provisions of the Kentucky Recreational Use Law, the route developers are trying to avoid putting up R-rated routes.

Risk can sometimes be minimized but never eliminated in this sport. I know you all are tired of hearing the same old song, but we are obliged to periodically remind you that rock climbing is inherently dangerous here in Muir Valley and everywhere in general. You could be injured or killed. None of the routes here are truly "safe". Climb at your own risk.

Thanks for your understanding.

Rick Weber

PS -- with these two closures, 238 other routes are currently open in the Valley. Enjoy!
