my car was broken into at the motherlode yesterday (9/11/05). it happened around 5-ish. my friends came down the trail and saw a black truck parked next to my car. the guy pulled out and waved. they realized that he was not a climber and went to look into all the cars. mine was the only one broken into. he got my stereo, my cds, and my owners manual.
heres the description:
completely black pickup truck, single cab, no topper, sponge-bob squarepants hanging from the rearview mirror. older guy with long hair and a beard. there were no license plates on the truck.
break-in at the lode 9/11/05
I had the same experience last spring, as I reported. It was a black Ford (I think a Splash). It was at Roadside and an older woman was smoking. There was small kid in the truck and two boys about mid-teen age jumped out, waited a moment when they spotted me, but then others came behind me so they took off.
Has anyone seen in a guy in an old red Chevy parked at Roadside/Zoo? I was at the parking lot Sat morning and a guy in another group saw him too so he approached him and the man said he went there in the mornings to read and get away from his wife.

This might sound really stupid, but I am going to say it anyway. And I am NOT saying that people should put themselves in danger in anyway - but seems like to me the only way to get anything accomplished in regards to break-ins at crag parking lots...is to literally fight back. If you SEE the person, if you are there if you witness the theft or even suspect that you have almost witnessed a theft....CONFRONT the person (I would make sure, like i said, don't put yourself in danger) but usually when climbing you have others with you...safety in numbers and all that.
The police are not doing anything obviously, reports have been made, complaints, descriptions and so on. When I hear about someone being proactive about it (the Manimal "catching" somone breaking into his car...others have told me about coming up on the theives and confronting them, sometimes even getting the stuff back from them right then and there.....) after I hear of reports like this, the break-ins seem to stop for awhile.
The other thing is, when you go to the Red, if you can pack this way, don't take anything you don't want stolen. I used to strip my Jeep (carpet and all) and leave the doors off, top down...nothing to take, nothing to break. Make it so you can leave the doors unlocked and the windows down. They won't break a window if the door is unlocked and the window down and if the door is unlocked, well what fun is that, must be nothing inside to take. Leave your uber valuables at Miguels or RRO or wherever you are staying....wherever you trust them, just not in your car. (Not saying it's your fault you got robbed...shit we got robbed so much in Vegas and it was nearly always our fault for leaving shit in the truck.) But leave the cds at camp, you don't really need them while you drive a couple miles to the crag....
Since the "LAW" is not going to protect you, you have to protect yourself in little but meaningful ways.

Sarah and Jason (Heath - bro and sis) did confront some people at the Lode a couple of months ago. It sounded like a great story, even better when Sarah tells it in person, reenactment and all.
The break-ins did seem to stop for a little bit after that episode.
