Wasn't he Doby Gillis is some other series before Gilligan's Island?

He was Maynard G Krebs ( a stinkin' beatnick ) in the Dobbie Gillis show.
A much hipper role than Gilligan.

Bah! That silly Krebs character was an awful 'hollywood' mockery of the beats! As penance you must all give a public reading of Ginsberg's "Kaddish" on the nearest street corner!

Actually, the thing I kind of liked about him (the real person, not the characters he played) was that as an old guy, he would give interviews wearing the silly Gilligan hat - you would expect the dopey character, but then he'd be all cranky! It was great!
