Scary trip to the veterinarian

Post by busty »

Last night, our dog managed to get ahold of bottle of ibuprofen. She chewed up the bottle and ate all of the pills - potentially 40 pills. Fortunately, we discovered this within about 2 hours, induced vomiting and took her to the emergency vet. Its still a waiting game for now while she is hooked to IVs to flush her system and we may not know whether she will be ok for another couple of days. The ibuprofen could potentially cause renal failure. Hopefully we acted quick enough.

We thought the pill bottle was not accessible to her. Wrong. As a heads up to everyone, be extra careful about where you place things like advil/ibuprofen - especially if your dog is a chewer. I'm learning a really scary, sad and painful lesson about this.

Cross your fingers for my canine pal.

Oh no, that's terrible! I really hope she's okay. I'm assuming she's a puppy so hopefully her system will be strong enough to fight.

Just out of curiousity, how did you induce vomiting? I would have no idea how to do that.
Does he have a strange bear claw like appendage protruding from his neck? He kep petting it.

Your poor puppy. :( My thoughts are with you guys.
I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Savannah is 4 yrs old and strong as can be. I hope that is in her favor.

Regular hydrogen peroxide will induce vomiting. Fill up a turkey baster and give it to the dog. It took at least 3 full doses before we got her to puke. It works very quickly. I felt terrible to do that to her, but it was probably very necessary.

Apparently dogs will appear ok after eating the pills for many hours or a couple of days. By that time, the damage may be done. This is a situation where you have to get to a vet pronto.

It's good that you caught it so quickly.

Get well soon Savannah.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Hopefully most of the pills did not have time to be fully digested.
