I noticed that the new routes have more stars than the universe. I have not been to all most of the new crags yet, so I can't say if these routes deserve the stars or not. But one thing that stands out when you look at the online guide is that most of the routes in the Southern region and at Muir have stars. In most cases ** and ***. There are walls where 100% of the routes have a ***.

The YDS used to rate route diffuculty is assinged by the FA party. My question is who assigns the stars to rate the quality of the route?

We all see stars, that is, stars are on online guidebook refer to the consensus among climbers who have taken the time to give their opinion as to how many stars a route should get. You'll note it goes from 1-5 stars.

You'll see the same thing for each route as to the rating, which may differ from the rating in the actual old printed guidebook by Johnny and/or the rating given by the FA. It, like the stars, is a consensus rating.

you can apply them on your spray list - i guess it get averaged out after enough data gets in.

This is the Red River Gorge and it ranks as one of the top sport climbing destinations in the world. Just as almost every crack at Indian Creek, UT is pristine, so are the sport lines at the Red.

is that like in t-ball where everybody gets a trophy?

Kind of, except there is no coach to take me home after a climb and make me touch him in strange spots.

Also, I think that the people putting up new lines are making quality a priority.

I completely agree. Most of the routes I've done in Muir Valley have deserved all those lovely stars.
