Thinking of John

I was up at the Vol Wall and along that side of Sore Heel today. I noticed all of the pink tags at the base of the rock. There weren't anchors or any rope hanging in proximity to these- just the pink tags at the base. They weren't arbitrarily along the base, but beneath anything that was the best line up the cliff. Every good looking line I came to had one of these tags beneath it. I was thnking, WTF. Were these John's lines he was tagging for himself, was someone else taggng these for future developement...?
then I saw SSS and she reminded me that John had tagged all of these for the mass drill fest day he organized last spring for everyone else to drill.
I was just struck with what a good eye he had for a stellar line. If it doesn't have one of those tags beneath it on that wall, it probably isn't worth the time.

Hmm... interesting... T bone and I bolted two of them last year. Perhaps we could bolt a couple more of them this year?

It seems to me that Lurk is suggesting to everyone that these lines need bolted and for the climbing community to step up and put in some man hours doing so. I think it would be good for everyone to put in some time adn see what it takes to put up routes and establish a crag. There should be (another?) Bolt Fest on Derby fest or somthing. see if we can get a dozen or so climbers that climb alot at the red but have never put a route up, come and put one up. What does everyone think? and who woiuld be 100% in?

I too was thinking of John after seeing pictures of him in Wes's slide show. Ryan knows the most about the pink tagged routes. Anyone thinking about bolting any of those routes should check with him & Dr. Bob, the acting Pendergrass Murray Recreational Preserve Manager first. Another organized bolting day would be great. I had participated in the first bolt fest at Volunteer Wall and put up my first sport climb under John's direction. We only had one "student" participate in the Rocktoberfest bolting clinic. There will be another bolting clinic on Memorial Day weekend as part of the RRGCC Rap n' Rawkus. It is planned to be held at Muir because the bolt testing work will be part of the clinic. If we could get more "students" attending the clinic, perhaps a bolting day at Volunteer would be a good follow-up to that?

I'll be at the bolt clinic, and I would be willing to put up some lines.

That is why I suggested that this be a follow-up to the bolting clinic. There would of course be experienced first ascentionists involved in a PMRP bolting day to mentor those just learning. Even those of you who are experienced first ascentionist should consider attending the upcoming bolting clinic to get the most recent version of the Bolting Manual compiled by Rick Weber and to learn first hand about the destructive bolt testing that he has been conducting.
