I was at Climbing.com and they had a poll up asking what people wear for approach shoes... but it wasn't very complete so I thought I'd launch my own here and see whats hip in the Red.

Old, retired tennis shoes.

when its warmer i pretty much always wear my chacos. they're really nice when doing to Funk Rock City b/c you don't really have to worry about getting your feet wet. I got a pair of Crocs recently and really like them but i don' t think their off road abilities are very good

Depends on if it's muddy. Boots if it's muddy & sneakers if it's not.

Stilettos or tennis shoes.

Mad Rock Half Dome. About half the time when hiking in or out in my hiking boots I'd roll an ankle. Since I've started wearing the approach shoes I haven't rolled an ankle.

Plus they send vFun great.

You didn't specifically list approach shoes as an option. I wear a pair of Lowa approach shoes.

I have worn Chacos ever since I broke my toe and couldn't get my foot in shoes. About six years now. I also started climbing barefoot during that broken toe thing. I am on my fourth resole. I find the Vibram type sole works just fine on all type of terrain. One of my legs is 1/2" shorter than the other. The Chaco construction allows for a simple wedge between the sole and footbed.

Trail running shoes most of the time. Hiking boots when muddy. Approch shoes with sticky rubber are key for a few areas - like Hueco and Vedauwoo, because you are doing a lot of scrambling around.
