North Carolina

Post by pigsteak »

Might be moving to Morganton, NC with the wife this summer. We are trying to decide how good the climbing is in the area. Morganton is 60 miles East of Asheville, and about 40 miles SE of Linville Gorge.

An online search does not seem helpful, outside of the typical trad areas. I have the guidebook, but really want beta on the closest sport and/or bouldering areas.

I'd appreciate any feedback. Where do people in NC go to clip bolts?

that's what I was afraid of. a buddy was telling me of some area due south of morganton (on the border with SC) that had sport. any thing else? outside of boone, where are the bouldering areas that are 5 star (not the Red type of bouldering)?

You'll just have to start trad climbing. NC has some amazing rock.
There are some sport routes up at Sauertown...that's close to Moore's Wall.

right, right...now answer my question, damm**!!! I will be trad climbing, that is the easy part to figure out, when it comes to NC. I was asking for help on the tough part, that underworld that no one dares speak about.

Can anyone tell me where the bouldering and sport climbing areas are in NC, or do they exist? Wes mentioned an area close to Asheville...anyone know of others?

anyone hear of sport at crowder's mountain state park?

Good luck with that.

There's a shitton of bouldering, not much dedicated sport that I know of, but you need to get into the aforementioned underworld as most of it's not published....

You gonna be there this weekend? Was thinking about a little roadtrip.
