Does bouldering help develop climbing ability?

Post by alfredo »

When I can't find a climbing partner I go to a bouldering gym. I'm always surprised when someone there tells me that bouldering won't help me climb better. I would think it's a whole lot better than going home and doing pushups and pullups! I'm sure there are a lot of opinions out there on this topic. How much does bouldering (indoors) help with climbing?

indoor climbing makes you strong physicaly but weak mentally. stay out of a gym. its is better to do pushups and pullups in the snow and wind.

i think most boulders can get on hard routes...maybe not endurance wise...but can do just as hard a move as someone who just sports it...but sport and tradies try to come into the gym...and get their butt whooped

Bouldering for me is has the same idea as campus boards and all for training. If you can hard moves start to feel easy then your body will not get tired as fast. Sure it doesn't really work endurance all that well but lets say you are climbing 5.12 and its just technical and powerful feeling for you. Bouldering help with both of those and pretty soon those moves are feeling easier, so you feel a little more fresh and the crux doesn't feel so hard.

I agree with kafish. If I don't have a partner or much time to spare I'll drop by the gym & boulder or traverse around the tower a few times (or both). I think it has really bumped up my strength.

But I'm speaking from a beginner's standpoint...it may be different down the line.

I do the same as you and kafish. Traversing can help you work your endurance. and boulder problems definitely help you learn sick moves... when you don't have a regular partner then gym bouldering is the only way to keep on improving...
