detour to hueco

Post by rockstar »

thinking of heading out west in mid-february if i get enough cash together soon. headed to jtree and then bishop before the main (hopefully) 6 month stop in yosemite. if i detour a little south and go to hueco on the way to jtree what are the chances i'll get to climb? being midweek and not during xmas break will help i'm sure but can i count on a day or two of climbing? and what would that cost a struggling dirtbag (entrance fee and camping)?

5 of us were at Hueco Dec 26 thru Dec 31. We climbed 4 out of 5 days, and the park was full because of big storms at Bishop and Yosemite and red rocks. If you have the time, and are willing to chill and wait for passes to open up, I'd say you have a good chance of climbing. If, however, like us, you had a specific time frame, and wanted to take a rest day on a specific day AND climb on specific days, then I'd suggest making reservations with the park or with a guide thru the rock ranch. Rob at HRR will hook you up the night before, so even if you just show up at his doorstep, you are highly likely to get in the next day. without going into all the details, depending on the tour you want will dictate your cost.

We had a blast, and I had been to Hueco 4 times before the closure. This was my first time back since. I have to say the state is doing a wonderful job preserving the area now, and I support the restrictions on number of guests. It is a bit of a pain to go with a guide, but it also made me appreciate all the free climbing I get to do the rest of the year. Hueco is too awesome of a place to get run over by pad wearing teenagers with little respect for the environment, so if I have to have a little inconvenience when I go, so be it. Besides, having to call ahead favors us old farts, and not the scuffy "no plans" dirtbaggers who can't plan for the next 24 hours let along weeks in advance. Hmmmmm, might be a lesson in here for those of us wanting to participate in the real world on their terms.

Go to Hueco..you'll be glad you did.
Positive vibes brah...positive vibes.
