Don't know if anybody else recieved the scoping letter, but the FS is seeking input on some sites at Military Wall. Included in these sites are the curently closed area, along with the niter mine by Subatomic Fingerlock. The FS is seeking public input on what to do with these sites. It is proposed to put down some sorta mat under the closed area to protect what (if anything) might be there and then open the area back up for use. They also propose fencing off (with a wooden split rail fence) the area around the niter mine, this might mean the closure of some routes, but names of specific routes aren't mentioned. They also want to erect a sign about an area that was used as an ox pen (?near the 12 wall ?).
Sorry I don't have the letter in front of me, but public comment only goes on a month or so. Please take time to give the FS your input on Military Wall.

Thanks Steve. I received the letter, as I am sure that others involved in the LAC process did. This project was noticed in the October 2004 SOPA (Schedule of Proposed Actions) but I couldn't find the details provided in this letter on the USFS website. I will try to find some time this weekend to provide details about this and also about the Wilderness Gateway project over on the www.rrgcc.org site.

Like I said, nothing up on the USFS page that I can find. I will try to post some details on the RRGCC site later this weekend.

Yeah, sorry my bad. I couldn't find anything on the DBNF site either, just posted that link for contact info. Sorry I don't have all the details to spill out here (letter is at home), did this as a reminder for myself as much as anything. Hadn't seen anything posted about this and wanted to give everyone a heads up.

I just posted the skinny on the Military Wall project over on the RRGCC site: http://www.rrgcc.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=650#650

I wouldn't be surprised if that happened at some point, but also wouldn't want to feed any rumors. Probabbly just get twisted around that it was a bunch of climbers. There is/was all sorts of artifacts and antiques in and around the RRG area ( http://www.redriverclimbing.com/album_p ... ic_id=1181 or http://www.redriverclimbing.com/album_p ... ic_id=1227 ) Some people just aren't educated (or just palin dumb) to know any better. What is true that people wandered all over those parts way before some climber or day hiker, some people are adement about protecting and preserving the stuff left behind, and we have to play by some 'rules' while 'standing firm' in our recreational beliefs to keep climbing.Alan Evil wrote:Hey, is it true that some campers burned an old animal pen from the 1800's there in the Gorge?
