hueco this winter

i am confused as to what i should do before i go to hueco this december. what kind of reservations do i need and what will it cost?
also where is the best place to stay for extended periods of time (3 months)? is there free camping anywhere or is hueco pete's a better choice? and what does it cost?

any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks.

there is no free camping anywhere around there. The best place to stay depends on whhat you are looking for. The State park has the best showers I've seen in any state park, and even beats most hotels (the ones I can afford anyways). They also have electrical hookups for an extra $2 for a site. The state park is quiet and cheaper if you have a group of 3 or more. Hueco Pete's charges $5 a night per person and they do check early everymorning for passes on your car. They have good cheap dinners usually too, all you can eat buffet style. Pete's is where all the climbers will be but the water is a limited supply and they ask that you fill up your water jugs at the State Park. Also Pete's usually runs out of water and fire wood several times a week. Reservations can be made 2 weeks in advance and are critical for North Mountain on weekends, which is where you need to go if you don't want to pay the hefty fee for a guide. There's no reservation for Monday or Tuesday, or least there didn't use to be. If you want to climb on East or West Mtn. or East Spur you have to shell out $15 a day for a guide. It sucks, but there is probably 100+ problems on North Mountain. Not three months worth of stuff, but more like 2 weeks. I recommend printing off a Dr. Topo guide to North Mountain. It's great, but the problem names are different then Sherman's printed guide. Oh, and all the El Murray's are huber classic

Also, buy a Texas State Park pass for roughly $30-40. It's good for the entrance fee and climbing on north Mountain. Otherwise it's $5 a day

haas, Your info is way dated. Petes has been closed for at least a year or two. The rock ranch is cool, you can pay $4 a night if you stay longer then two weeks, or you can maybe work out a way to trade camping for work. Staying in the park is cheaper if you have at least three people per site, but you have to deal with a lot more BS to stay there for very long. Changing sites and reservations and stuff like that. You can camp for free in a few places around there, but it would be kinda spooky to do if for very long.

Volunteer tours are free, with admission. Comercial tours cost money. You need a guide for east or west mtn. North is open to a limited number of people. There are at least 10 walk in spots per day, sometimes more. Texas Parks pass is 65 this year, and can get a whole car in, rather then one person like last year. Check out the hueco rock ranch website.

thanks guys. so should i get a pass or hitch in to the park with another car?

if i go in with another car do i need reservations? where do i call to get the reservations?

*Of course Bishop is choss, and the regs are not all that big a deal, as long as you know about them, and accept the limits that will be placed on you.
