Tweaked Shoulder

I pulled something in my shoulder last night at the gym. At first, I didn't think it was anything but driving home, I really began to feel it. Whenever I shifted up into 1st, 3rd, or 5th, there was a sharp pain on the top of my right shoulder. It seems to hurt the most when I hold my arm out to the side, bent at the elbow and bring it forward.

Anyone ever have shoulder pain like that?

It might just be old age taking its toll.

Ouch. Take it easy for a couple of days. Gently stretch and massage the area often. This should speed the recovery process. (I've had my left shoulder replaced). It now has two plates, 4 screws, and a pin.

I bet it's tough going through airport security.

Replacement is not on my list of options at this time. Hopefully taking it easy for a few will help.

Sounds like a rotator cuff injury.
I just went to the doc for the same thing.
He basicly said do some light stretching, ice it, gave me some naproxin, said if it hurts-don't do it.
Don't imobilize it though, that will not help.

Originally it was from a high school football injury in 1991. The last time I injured it was in 1995 or 96? It became dislocated when I fell from a hand jam (while leading a 5.9 trad route in southern Indiana) going up and over a bulge when my foot slipped. After some herbal medicine I was able to put the ball back in the socket with the help of a large rock and some grunting. Then I made a sling with the webbing. I wanted to finish the route, but Eric insisted that I go to the hospital so he and Dugan quickly finished the climb and we left. I felt bad for them not being able to climb that day (it was our first route of the day). Anyway, everything is fine now. You probably just tweaked something and need a few days off.

I injured my shoulder a couple of years ago rappin' off Jewel Pinacle. Fortunately, I work with some great PTs and had ultrasound and advise at my disposal. Definitely ice for the first 72 hours and do some light range of motion to keep stiffness away. Maybe I'm stupid, but I only missed one weekend of climbing and did a skydive right after the injury. I still don't have the range in that shoulder as I do in the other, and sometimes when I am pulling or posing I really get a crunch and munch sound effect. :roll: You are not old; just got a boo boo I hope! DON"T USE IT! I strained my rotator cuff last year and it was rough. My advice to you...cure it with peas. Yep, frozen peas on the arm every chance you get. I did this for a full month, rested my arm and made a complete recovery. Ice the arm, eat 4 ibuprofen a day, and rest. The Lurkist put me on that program and it really worked. And I'm old!

Yeah, I was stupid and didn't rest like I should have; hence, the limited range and crackles. I have a tendency not to listen! :P I'm not old! :wink:

Geoff,

It sounds like you irrated a rotator tendon - maybe. When I messed mine up I couldn't lift my arm up from my side without a lot of pain. A trip to the Doc and some muscle relaxers, some rest, more rest, then some more rest, followed by some LIGHT freeweight excercises for a while got me through it.
