Spectacular place... like Jtree but with longer routes and less crowds. Take 2 ropes... a great many routes there require two ropes to get down. My guidebook says April-November as the climbing season. It's high desert so you get hot days and cold nights. Fall is probably best (like it is everywhere). I was there in August of last year. It was hot, but not unbearably. We climbed in the morning and chased shade... definitely not as bad as summer around here. Check for crag closures. Almo is a tiny little town about 15 minutes out that has a great General Store (Tracy's) with showers and good eats.

Routes there are often a bit run-out and scary.
I really want to get on Crack of Doom sometime before I die.

Late spring is probably the best time to go though summers out there are pretty cool too.

the city is sweet. make sure you reserve a camping spot if you head in on a weekend. beware, there are not many easy sport climbs and those that are tend to be extremely run out(30 feet to the first bolt and stuff) however there is plenty of good harder stuff and tons and tons of trad. plus it is extremely beautiful.

don't get gas right next to the interstate. it is cheaper in some of the small towns on the way in.

the guidebook is not the best i have seen but still is useful. you might want to get your hands on it ahead of time and work through it some.

When are you going?

Cool,

Thanks for the replies.

Not sure if we are going for sure.
Every year about this time, when the days get shorter and colder, I start thinkin' about a spring trip.

Went to Red Rocks this past April and it's either back there or Idaho.

why Idaho? --- Speaking of trips, i've started saving money a year in advance for a trip to New Zealand next December... that'll be good stuff. I've entitled the trip planning folder... "The Return of the King". ;-p

But now that you mention it, I will just save my money too and go to New Zealand with you

New Zealand will be fantastic, JB! My future trips are Joshua Tree in February (turning into an annual thing), maybe Yosemite in April and definitely 2 weeks in Alaska in July. I may try to swing a short trip in December, too. Where is a good place to climb in the Continental US that time of year?

I also want to hit City of Rocks sometime within the next year or two and would have to do some backpacking while in that beautiful state. There are SO MANY places I want to climb. Life is good!
