Non-climbers are retarted!
This bit*h from my school starting instant messaging me out of nowhere saying "rock climbing isn't a sport its a hobbie if even that." I reply, "are you retarded? Rock climbing is so much more physically challenging than any other sport you can think of." Once again she replys, "its not a sport" and i then said "how, you consider snowboarding a sport, why?" She replys, "you compete" I recoil with "you compete more in rockclimbing" And then the stupid bit*h goes on and on abuot how climbing is just pulling up on streyphome walls on little nubs and such and falling on bungee cords. So here i am getting all steamed up! What should i tell her.
Alan Evil is a whiney fucking bitch.

young n....
sorry, but your ex is right.....for 99% of people, rock climbing is a hobby. but so is playing on a summer softball league. sports typically have a well defined set of rules and parameters (hence the competitive thing), and climbing is still too whip jawed to abide by any set of rules. (PS..there are hundreds of "rules" in climbing, but climbers like to think of themselves as "fringe", so they eschew rules.....don't ask..it's just human nature to be contradictory.)
the bigger issue is
1) I think you still want her
2) calling a lady a b*tch just because she bad mouths your petty little hobby is in bad style.... dude....(for effect)
3)if what someone else labels your fun is a point of contention, then perhaps you need to re-examine why you climb. It shouldn't matter to you.

Positive vibes brah...positive vibes.
Wait, didn't Hemingway say, "There are only 3 sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games." Just change the mountaineering to rock climbing and she'll never know the difference.
The theory of evolution is just as stupid as the theories of gravity and electromagnetism.

Young'n-- if all she knows of climbing is that people sometimes stop by the gym and pull on plastic holds to make it to the top of a plywood wall, then it makes sense that she would think of it as nothing more than a hobby.
Anyway, here's what I gleaned from www.dictionary.com:
Hobby: An activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure.
Sport:
Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
An active pastime; recreation.
So really, you could consider rock climbing either or both of these. Really though, who cares? Rock climbing is rock climbing. If it's fun and you're enjoying yourself, why label it further?
