Emotionally Torn

Post by Saxman »

I am sitting here looking at some of the most beautiful weather we have had this spring and I am not climbing. ARGHH! Oh well, at least a good DCI show is worth it. Just curious, anyone else a fan of DCI? In case you were wondering, DCI stands for Drum Corps International. A drum and bugle corps will march an 11 minute show which is analogous to what you remember as high school marching band. Only, watching DCI is like watching the NBA in comparison to your high school basketball team. Don't worry if you don't get it, most non-music people don't.

man! i thought i was the only one! dammit. i'm not really torn about it. i'd much rather watch it than go do something constructive with my life. did you see drumline? man, that was a good flick. almost as good as you got served.

Band Mom here! Drum break was my favorite part of the show! I also love drum and bugle corp, Sax. Can't say I totally agree with your comparison though. We sported some really good HS bands in Kentucky past. George Rogers Clark and Lafayette consistently alternated national championship honors in the 80s and 90s. My sister-in-law was in GRC' band, and my cousin was in Lafayette's. Those old tapes are fantastic! I haven't kept up since all my birds are out of the nest!

yeah, what he said. work on saturday sucks.

I never really enjoyed band camp enough to consider doing it after high school. hmmm, 24 year old band campers who have to smuggle in cheap beer so they don't get caught by the 38 year band camp counselor. sounds great.

Actually, I was kicked out of band camp one year.

It was my daughter's junior year, and I was a chapharone.

No! Actually, I think the last thing I said was something like, "F*** you, you stupid Amazon rent-a-cop!"

My brother-in-law was the band director. He still likes to bring it up!

Dipsi, I'll agree that some high schools put on a hell of a show, but most people never get to see a great show in their hometowns. That comparison is about the only way to explain to people out of the know what DCI is. Most people just simply can't envision it in all its glory. Of course, no high school is ever going to be able to put together a show as complex, well rehearsed, and of course loud, as the top 12.

Man I was in a marching band during high school. It was actually pretty fun because I was in one of the best bands in the country. But as with a lot of things in life, I never liked watching it, just doing it.
