The last day we were down at road side, some foaks were hogging all the easy leads, they would leave, pull there rope, and leave there draws and be back a hour later and come back. Is it ok to climb on there draws? Or is it there route? I mean, we have hogged routes to, but usally only one, and dont mind shareing the rope and letting other top rope ours, but these guys seemed to care about no one alse abd hogged about 3 climbs.

Any advice would be helpful, I hear at some places, if there are draws and no one there its ok to use there gear, I just dont like not knowing the history of it.

as far as i know, it's totally cool to use draws haning on a route, especially if the person to whom they belong is not present. I put up draws for the day/season all the time with the understanding that anyone who wants is free to climb on them.

If i walked up to a crag and saw draws I would not just climb on them, unless I knew who they belonged to. For one thing I don't trust that other people take care of their things like I do (i'm an equipment freak) and also some folks might not like you jumping on their draws.

That being said I also think it is SUPER rude to just leave your stuff up and go somewhere else. If you are done climbing something clean the route and if you happen to come back just put the draws back up it.

philip, my advice would be to climb on them if no one is around. If someone from the group is still there just ask them to make sure, but you definately can't use quickdraws to "hold" a route.

And don't take bruisebrothers advice. I think we all would agree that a route full of quickdraws (even an easy route) is not booty.

You cant use draws to "hold" a route or any other gear for that matter.You cant even use your body in route to "hold" a route. If you wanted to get on a climb even when someone else was climbing it. You can. They might not like it, but you could. (Judging from the whiney-ass kids at the crags you would probably get away with it too.Oh they might bark a little but they definitely wouldn't bite.)
You see, the thing that allows us to socialize is that we socialize. I don't want to soud cryptic but its just that simple. We are social, hence we socialize. If you are at a crag and someone shits on you ropebag. You could go back home and get on the computer and ask the womens soccer club what they think you should have done. Or better yet. You could have been social and asked the people if they minded if you climbed the route that they were not currently on. They would've said yes or no. Either way I would have been climbing the route. (1) If they said go ahead....cool, you're on! (2) If they had said no then you are in as well. Anyone boorish enough to think that they can possess a route them they deserve someone to get as brutish as they are.
Now granted this second choice may get you into a physical confrontation. Be prepared for that. Chances are nothing would come of it even if they vehemently protested.
You see the rules are....there are no rules. You cant say this is this and that is that it just doesn't work that way. Talk to the people that you are having a problem with. They may turn out to be cool people. They may not. But asking a third party after the fact doesn't solve anything. Think for yourself and dont be so afraid of climbers. By and large they are a cool set of people 8)

If the person is not around and the draws are there, i would use them. If the persone is around just talk to them. I have only met one person at the gorge who wasn't nice. The majority of poeple would be more than happy to have you run up the route on their draws.

I don't. If you are trying to redpoint a climb at your limit, you might make three or four runs up the route. (and your partner could be working another climb so you would be leaving your draws and going back and fourth between the two climbs.) Theres not a chance I'm going to rehang the draws every time. I think that it is completley reasonable to leave draws hanging. On the other hand if someone had a major problem with it I would remove them for them. However in my experience people have been more than happy to use draws when there on a route.

And as tsparks said, you definitely can't hold a route with quick draws!
