I am now planning a trip this summer to the nrg. A few questions i have are-where to camp, recomended crags, and recomend routes?

get a hotel room, summersville, and every route there. there are alot of boulder problems out in the water too

I would agree with allah, a hotel room at NRG is probably your best bet. People told me that Roger's was the "Miguel's of the East"... after taking a few curves and a dead end gravel road, I found out this was not the truth. Oh, and the bouldering at Hawk's Nest kicks ass... but who drives to the New to boulder?

You should always look into rafting or kayaking plans before you go. When you take one look at the river your plans may change. Unless you have friends down there, you will not find anyone that rents out kayaks. Only classes are offered and they usually come up short. At the minimum, look into the rafting and who might have openings on the days of your visit.

Oh, and there are a couple of cool campgrounds just north of the bridge... one on the left and right at the first crossing. You'll see the signs. Usually hot out-of-town rafting chicks hang out there... unfortanately most of them are with their boyfriends.

If you want to stop on the way there or on your way back to shorten the trip for a day... Charleston has a Chi Chi's that offers free pool and free arcade racing games inside the bar. Man, you can't beat that shit for a night of laziness. It's located on the same exit as the Country Inn & Suits.

I have had good luck at the campground at the top of Kaymor (Rogers I think ) Good acess to the crags, And nice poeple. You can scam free showers at any of the rafting companys.

If you want secluded, woods camping the US Army Corp of Engineers land off of 19 near Summersville Lake. There’s a road on the left (heading N on 19) that runs parallel for a little while. Gravel roads from this road head back to the lake edge to campsites. Cool summing climbing. You can boulder above the water if you want. You have to hit it at the right time though. It depends on how deep the lake is
