It looks like the Forest Service is finally moving ahead on the Military Wall Closure. I received notification yesterday that, "The Forest Service is proposing to protect 2 heritage resource sites and rehabilitate highuse areas along the climbing area known as Military Wall." A decision on the Environmental Assesment (EA) is expected in July 2004 with implementation scheduled for August 2005. More info is available @:
http://www.southernregion.fs.fed.us/boone/plan.htm under the online document April 2004 SOPA. I am sure we will be hearing more details of this project soon from the RRGCC.

so they are working on opening the fenced in area?

That is what I am assuming from reading the SOPA but will not know for sure until I see the proposal that is indicated to be in development. As far as I understand, we have been waiting for the Indian Tribes to review the situation before the USFS could take any further action. I guess the Tribes have given them some response.

With our luck it will be a permant closure of the entire wall.

If they planned a closure why would they have to wait a year between the decision on the EA in July 2004 and the implementation in August 2005?

Sorry CS. I'm just cynical like that some times. It seems like bad luck follows me around.
And in case you are wondering it's on page 2 of the pdf. It's just one of those language things. How each group defines "rehabilitation."
But wait there's more. I have to be wrong b/c it says: "Selected areas along Military Wall..."

i wonder if they'll take into account the environmental impact the Forest Service caused by putting the fence there, which created about 3 feet of subsidence along the perimeter (like the lurkist was talking about in another thread), AND the new extension of the fence, with a newly built trail along it's perimter. good ol' FS!

I wonder if the Forest Service considers the impact of those big damn trucks that they drive.

The FS should start using horses and get rid of those damn trucks.
