Halmark, the florists and the candy stores. That's who. And the man. It's the man puttin' us down with their flowers and chocolate and cards man.

And now let the flames begin. There should be a warning about you need fire retardant suits when you enter this forum!

We just need to get back to the true roots of this day, before the church ruined a perfectly good thing:

From: http://wilstar.com/holidays/valentn.htm
For eight hundred years prior to the establishment of Valentine's Day, the Romans had practiced a pagan celebration in mid-February commemorating young men's rite of passage to the god Lupercus. The celebration featured a lottery in which young men would draw the names of teenage girls from a box. The girl assigned to each young man in that manner would be his sexual companion during the remaining year.

I'm not a fan of forcing romance. I'd rather be with a man who is romantic on his own schedule and then Valentine's Day wouldn't matter either way. Then again, I'm not a fan of exchanging birthday and Christmas gifts, either (except with my children, of course). It feels so forced. I prefer to be impulsive with gift giving. Once in a while I luck out and think of a perfect gift for someone near their birthday, but I never go out and try to find a gift just because I feel I have to. That's what Valentine's Day seems like. Screw that.

dang, nice find, Wes! (Leave it to you...) I never knew that. Since I have a daughter who will be a teenager in a few years, I have to say that I don't much care for that idea either.

The church has ruined many a good day, this being just one of them. Do some google searches on the history of Valentines day. They used to do some crazy stuff back in the day. Makes Mardi Gras seem kinda tame.

I'll bet pagans could buy beer on Sundays back in the day, too. Lucky bastards!

Remember when you were younger and in school you made boxes all decorated and so on for people to put those cheesey little cartoon valentines in or whatever....well I work with a woman who has pre-school-aged kids and she said that they are no longer allowed to put names on the Valentines - because it takes TOO LONG for them to get handed out name by name to specific kids. Ain't that some shit. I mean at least it was something fun when you were little you know....at least then Valentines day wasn't about $50 flowers and shit like that...yeah maybe you wanted to make sure you had the super cool mickey mouse cards or something, but it was still pretty innocent and just fun. Apparently decorating boxes creates too much competition between kids too - OK I can understand that would be bad - but what...are they going to start checking the kiddies' cards for ricin and shit now too.
(keep in mind that although I have helped raise children, I don't have my own....so it's an unparental opinion, but I was a kid once too, so I have some foundation to rant from)

Blah

Valentines Day is just another day - show the people you care that you care about them everyday.

And what's with Sweetest Day? Seriously - now THERE is a totally made up, corporate, Hallmark holiday.

ok, I'm done now, anyone want my soapbox?
