So I was looking at Martin Hackworth's website, and it has a picture of him leading Insanity Ceiling back in the winter of '81. The photo does not have a great deal of resolution, but it appears that he is significantly to the right of where we originally went through the roof in '79. The line that Tom and I took surmounts the roof directly at the thin splitter crack, then follows a series of desperately sloping solution pockets to parallel thin cracks in the upper headwall. These thin cracks were dispatched by alternately laybacking (wouldn't you know it) the right one to the left, and then the left one to the right. I found the whole sequence to be the next thing to impossible at the time. Looking at Martins photo makes me wonder if there might actually be two different lines going by the same name. Johnny, Ray, what do you think. Or am I just misinterpreting the Hackworth photo.

Ah yes, the Bruise Brothers. While I wouldn't exactly say climbing had gone mainstream with the appearance of this crew, they surely marked the beginning of the end of the Old School experience in the RRG.

As a measure of how good we had it back then, consider this. One impossibly perfect fall day in '76 my beautiful girlfriend and I, overcome by the passion of the moment, stripped off our clothes and got after it in the autumn leaves on the forest floor right at the base of Jungle Beat. No way we would have been so uninhibited had the Brothers been wandering about.

I seem to remember it being like your description, Larry. But at the same time, the photo looks correct to me.

Thanks, SCIN. It doesn't really matter but I'll be back in the area some time and take a closer look at it. I'm probably just not reading the photo right, as I can't imagine there could be two different lines here.

There is no forest floor or leaves under Jungle Beat anymore.
The roof picture is stellar though.Would make a great guidebook cover.

hey, i think insanity ceiling was featured on the back cover of Ed Pearsal's guide book, with a crazy haired Larry Day doing the deed. Good stuff.

Could any of you post those pics in the album. I can not seem to get them to load up on my computer. Besides,....I think they would be a great addition to the album as well.
