anyone around here climb in dayton? i visited a gym called urbancrag just for a look-see and, although we all agree nothing beats the red or the outdoors, it still looks pretty cool.
when's a good time to climb there?..it was pretty packed when i walked in..

I climb there 3 nights/week. It is usually busy after 6pm M-F. Weekends are good, but sometimes they have large groups of boy scouts and what not. During the day is excellent, if you like it quiet/low-key. I have been climbing there regularly for 5 yrs now. It is a great gym....great place to meet new people to climb with!

thanks giggle.
it looks like they have some fun features for lead.
i'm trying to get my lead-on as it were and am looking for variablity.
but dayton is still an hour drive from "here." so its a "snowy-day" activity!

I have been going there every other weekend on sundays and it is not too crowded. It has some great routes, and some cracks, but I found some of the crack climbs a little greasey and hard to get a good jam in.

I've been going to the Urban Krag off and on for about 5 years. It's a cool place to climb. Most of the people who climb there are interesting and willing to give you a belay if you come alone. Tuesday and Thursday nights are pretty much for the hardcore climbers and some of them have crappy egos. Still, there are some really fun people who climb these nights too. In the winter just about every night is busy...same goes for weekends and you'll sometimes have to wait in line for a route. Afternoons are good/quiet.
check it out.

This is pretty much off topic but I was born in Dayton a long long time ago.

alan, long ago and far away you were not born you were propagated...out of the ooze electrified by lightening.
now, off your topic.
i made it to urban krag last weekend to climb...familial obligations (oi vey...it was so nice for the red that it made me want to cry and i'm willing to concede that it may have colored my opinion of the fine establishment of uk.).
it seemed that a lot of the really fun routes were all lead and to get lead certified there you have to have someone who's already certified with you. since i know no-one, i got no love.
it is a fun place but i think if i'm going to be driving so far to climb indoors, i'd head towards cincy where i like the variety the route setters there provide.
still it is quite the pretty place. and like i said, had i been on-lead or had it been rainy at the red or had i not had to deal with relatives (okay, i'm a coward) then i might have had better eyes in my head.

I climb there when i get the chance. Between work and school i keep prertty busy. Though if you are ever there i'll climb. Also ask for Mark, he's a pretty cool guy to climb with, he's there pretty often, (well he works there).
