I have to fly to DC this weekend for a 4 day business trip - it's got me more nervous than tramping through the woods during hunting season, even though I know the probability of me getting shot is pretty damn low. Thinking about the precautions I'll be taking makes me really empathize with everyone living in that area, and even more so with people in war torn countries where stuff like this (and worse) is a daily fact of life. We sure do have it good in this country, and I really hope this is not a new trend..

NO doubt! I hope that this does not set a presidence for future psychos! The mere fact that the authorities have not been able to do squat is not very reassuring to the public!
Be Safe Lynne!

This reply isn't supposed to be funny, but I am giggling already just thinking about it!
When I was a teen in Crab Orchard, KY, we had at least two shoot-outs a month on Main Street. A good friend was hit in the eye with glass when a bullet went through her father's store front window. They thought she had been shot until they got her to the hospital. Another time a friend was trapped in a phone booth during a shoot-out, and the only thing that saved her from a stray bullit was the metal bottom. If that wasn't bad enough, one of the shooters rammed the gas station and the phone booth with his car a few times for emphasis. I had to dive head first into the bed of a moving truck one night because an old hermit was shooting at me! Okay, admitted, I was banging on his door on a dare, but that's beside the point! You would think that small town USA would have been safer than DC, but I guess it really wasn't! Be careful Lynne, the whole world is full of nuts, and it always has been! dipsi

I hear if you want to increase your safety you should walk zig-zagged.

I'm not worried about being shot, honestly, just frustrated that I will have to take precautions since I'll be right there in Maryland in his hunting grounds. The whole situation just got me thinking.. many of my friends live there, with kids in school, and they are very afraid. It's frightening how ill-equipped our law enforcement agencies are to handle something like this. Anyway, what scares me most about this trip is having to wear suits and uncomfortable shoes.
Di, that's funny stuff. I used to work in a Ski Shop near the Pentagon when I was in high school & college. I recall one day when there was a shootout right next door to us, outside of a restaurant. There were cops everywhere and bullets flying. We had a huge wall of glass facing the restaurant so we saw the whole thing (from our vantage points on the floor). I was only about 17, so I thought it was fun at the time.

I went to high school in Savannah, GA for a few hears. I remember one year there was a gang called "The Givins Gang" and their initiation was to kill a white person cold blooded without taking anything from them. One event I remember was of a lady who, while pumping her gas late at night, went up to the outside window of the convenient store to pay for it and the attendent said, "Don't turn around, I'm calling the police right now. I just saw a man crawl into the back seat of your car." It was a fucked up time.
