Can anyone tell me any history/info about the closed carpet store that you pass on your way into Muir Valley? How long has it been empty/why? Any info, even a street address, would be of interest to this curious climber! Thanks!

I've always taken it as given truth that it's some sort of drug front. No evidence but it just sort of looks like it. It hasn't changed in appearance that I recall in the last 4 years.

Been there since 2000 at least. Was actually a carpet store for awhile. Went bust, who'd a thunk it......

I'm actually in school with the grandson of the man who owned and ran it. From what I've gathered, it was the local carpet shop for many years before the owner died (before climbing was big at Muir). It's still owned by the family, though obviously not used anymore. It was very cool to learn some story behind what has always been the iconic landmark for Muir.

Cool, thanks for the info! I was able to find out that it closed about 13 years ago when the proprietor passed away but that the land is still owned and occupied by the same family. Now I'm curious to everyone's opinions: do you think the climbing community would be glad or sort of disappointed to see something else open in that building, like a coffee shop perhaps? Nothing commercial.

I think you are placing waaaaay to much sentimental value on an old abandoned carpet store, I don't think climbers would care at all if it gets changed to something else. Its not like its a world heritage site for sport climbing, it is a closed carpet store.... Personally I don't think a coffee store would do well there, I would not want to buy a hot cup of coffee 2 minutes before hiking 25 mins to the crag.
