New Main Trail System at Muir is Open

Post by weber »

All hiking access into the Valley has been consolidated into two main trails, both starting at one point at the shelter house at the main Parking lot. These two new first class trails — one to the north part of the Valley and one to the south — have been under construction for the past few months and just recently been completed. This greatly simplifies access to the Valley floor as well as minimizing the distance and elevation of the hikes in and out of the Valley. The downloadable maps on the http://www.muirvalley.com website and the kiosk map have been updated to reflect these new changes.

The MAIN TRAIL - SOUTH leads to the Bruise Brothers, Washboard, Practice, Guide, Land Before Time, Front Porch, Sunnyside, Bowling Alley, and Southside walls.

The MAIN TRAIL - NORTH lead to all other Muir Valley walls.

Also, the emergency/maintenance road that runs the length of the Valley has been updated and improved and provides a convenient hiking path between the North and South parts of the Valley.

Should we be avoiding the North trail after rain? Seemed quite muddy and ripe for erosion when wet.

When the newly built sections receive the first rain or two, indeed, the freshly packed earth turns to muck in some spots. But, the trails have now pretty well packed down by hundreds of hikers. The last section built on the lower part of the Main Trail -South might still be a bit soft after lots of rain, but it should settle down in the next week or two. As these trails were built to the "rolling grade dip" method, there are no low spots to collect water and turn to muck.

Hiked the new trail last weekend. I swear, Miur has the most accessible climbing in the world.

Thanks for another improvement, Rick and all the volunteers and supporters. Muir is better maintained than most all public parks!
