transverse retinacular ligament issues (middle finger joint)

Post by Andrew »

Does anyone have any experience with transverse retinacular ligament injuries. Mine slowly got worse, then I took time off, then it slowly got better while climbing easier, then on Monday I re-injured it and my finger barely works.

After reading some climbing injury material it looks like people develop stress fractures or avulsion fractures where this tendon connects. Has anyone had this injury and what was recovery like?

I am going to a hand specialist on Tuesday. Is there any info I should bring with me. I am guessing he knows little about climbing or climbing injuries.

How did you arrive at your diagnoses?

I had three avulsion fractures from one injury in my ankles, and they took about 3 months or so to be back to 80% strength. I'm still super careful when I hike, and my ankles are fatter than normal. They're stronger now than they were before (after nearly two years) but that's after physical therapy and strength training. I'm not sure hoe you should go about it with your fingers though. I'm no doctor or physical therapist.

I don't have a diagnoses, but I am married to a ATC PT, so I got a few ideas. Like I said, does anyone have any experience with the top of their knuckle hurting and swelling so much they can't use it.

Not sure if any of these are just snake oil but might be something to it...

I think I may have had the same injury. Does normal bending your finger backwards hurt (putting your hand in your pocket)?
