Lee and Powell County officials are holding an event tomorrow at 9am on Big Bend Road, 2 miles off state highway 1036, neighboring Natural Bridge SP. The tourism board has requested those in support of increased access to public lands to show up tomorrow to show support. Regardless of personal opinion, this is an interesting read and exciting day for another large user group in the eastern KY region...

Pretty cool to see! I've driven back there before but never quite understood the history behind the area.

Check out this timeline from their FB page... rad! Wish climbers had a ball or two to their name sometimes too:
A brief timeline of events:
1920 or so: Road is created as the only means of access to the sand lick area
1950 or so: Road maintenance by Powel and Wolfe counties begins making this an official county road.
1980 or so: Maintenance no longer being performed, road becomes a de-facto OHV destination.
1980-2006: Road is enjoyed by thousands of enthusiasts, bringing much needed revenue to a depressed economy and allowing taxpayers to enjoy their federal lands.
2006: Road is illegally closed by forest service without so much as a comment period.
2006-2013: County conduct surveys and digs through records to make certain of legal status of the road.
3/26/2013: County road crews reopen this historic route for the first time in 7 years
3/28/2013: Forestry officials close to road again, erecting a barrier and digging a deep trench.
4/3/2013, 9am EST: WE THE PEOPLE take back the road by force!
County road crews will be on hand and so will federal authorities... Even if you are not an OHV enthusiast, you should be there and show the federal government that we are their employers not their slaves!

Ya ya drive in off big bend then take a right at the major fork where the power lines cross the larger logged area then drive about 2 miles till you see the wooden railings on your left.
