Does Miguel have a stash of new guidebooks for sale?

Post by lena_chita »

Couple people asked me, I thought I would double-check before I tell everyone that they could be picked up along with the pizza. :)

They did last I was there although they may sell out pretty quickly with the spring break crowds coming in.

If you are looking for guidance to the newest lower grade areas in Muir (Land before Time and Guide Wall), well for some unknown reason they were not included in this newest edition. Remember there are 2 books now; one for the northern gorge(north of the tunnel) and one for all the southern region.

Be thankful, Ray was going to omit any route under 5.12 since anything lower than 5.12 isn't actually climbing. He compromised by omitting those crags.

Yeah I think I know what you mean. The last edition a couple years ago left out lots of northern trad climbs and even areas,(found on line only) due to the lack of interest and focus on hard sport instead. I view the books as not just a guide to ALL new routes, but a sort of history book too of the past climbs in the gorge. But I realize that would end up being a 6 pound 4 inch thick edition for 75 bucks; not of much use on the crags each day.

Obscure areas were left out of the third to keep the size down. Nothing to due with hard sport. Those little walls in Muir weren't included because i ran out of time and didn't get a chance to visit them.

I am calling BS! Ray left it out intentionally to keep traffic down on his sic proj k5.8 at the Land Before Time.

Oh yes, those two areas were the only reason i wanted the new guidebook! Thanks for the warning, I won't throw any money away now, but I am crushed! Completely crushed. I have heard that there was a 20-ft 2bolt 5.7 called Basilisk at Land Before Time that alone was worth the travel from Europe. How would I find my way there, without a guidebook?

Again, the guidebook and routes are not just intended for the visiting hard core climber. I know Webers were pleased with the addition of the new easier route areas, just to pull the crowds off Bruise Bros. and shorten the waiting lines, crowds, erosion, etc.down there. Thus including them in the new book would have been a benefit for all, and those not interested in lower grade routes lose nothing from their fine day of 5.12's just because the book mentions these lowly routes. No need to mock those who start out( as we all did sometime) on easier routes.
