IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

We have just been notified that effective immediately, the Wolfe County Ambulance service is no longer in operation. We are not sure if, or what, other county service will cover this area. Many county emergency services are suffering from funding shortages.

The bottom line at this time is that ambulance response time will probably be significantly lengthened. In Wolfe County, be prepared to personally transport injured persons to either Clark Memorial Hospital in Winchester or KRMC in Jackson.

This does not include the Wolfe County Search and Rescue Team or the Muir Valley Rescue Group, which are all-volunteer groups and are operational to limits of available volunteers. However, the medical capabilities of these groups are limited to Wilderness First Responders.

We will try to post updates to this situation as we receive them.

Thanks Rick. That is good information to know. I look foward to coming down next weekend. Your information is always helpful. I enjoyed our conversation about poisonous snakes in the parking lot a few weeks ago, it was very informative.

FYI, Wolfe county includes:

-Many of the eastern DBNF crags (e.g., Funk Rock City, Wall of Denial)
-The crags along KY-11 (e.g., Global Village, Roadside, Zoo)
-Muir Valley

PMRP and several DBNF crags (e.g., Military, Phantasia) are not in Wolfe Co.

P.S.,
https://maps.google.com/ has FINALLY implemented a county search function. Just type "Wolfe County, KY"

Where we live in Wyoming there are no county ambulance services. All services are privately run by the two hospitals in the 6,970 sq mi. county. Response times for the ambulance I work for can be as much as an hour and a half, up to three hours to definitive care. Luckily, there is rarely ever a serious emergency and while someone may be in a great deal of pain until the ambulance arrives, they will likely not die in that time. And for those times when people need help FAST we have excellent helo coverage from several bases in the state and the criteria for calling one is relatively low.

Rick, have you ever thought about setting up an LZ in the valley floor? Of course, Wolfe SAR may have protocols in place that dictate when and when not to tie up a helicopter for a med flight.
