Living the Dream....

Post by pigsteak »

I hear many these days use this trite saying, and I am on a quest to find out EXACTLY what it means. For you, what would be living the dream? If you are truly living the dream, what could be better? If you are not living the dream, what is holding you back? Just curious.....
Positive vibes brah...positive vibes.

I think I'm pretty close to living the dream. The only thing that's been holding me back is my reluctance to completely unburden my heart in online forum posts. Help, please.

Mr. Steak if you catch me using this phrase you can be sure there is a heavy dose of sarcasm associated with it.

Good question Kipp... I could use some unburdening myself as I'm drowning in a sea of tedious statistics this month. Some friends have spent the last several winters (more like half the year accurately) developing sport routes, deep water soloing, and slacklining limestone islands on a 60-foot clipper ship in Thailand. A few others were in Patagonia suffering away on perfect alpine granite. (They all have good seasonal jobs for the other half of the year). Both sound utterly dreamlike to me right now, but sort of an unreal dream I can't even imagine anymore. 7+ more years of this medical school/research torture chamber and I should finally be free enough and have enough money to travel again and see more of the world. What's keeping from me "living" that dream now? Reality I guess, the demands of getting older and being average-lower-middle class, needing to eat, have a home, go to the dentist every once in a while after 10 years or so of unstable but completely free living without a safety net.

Unfortunately we keep getting older (what a drag), and "living the dream" (cough cough) every day, every year exerts a serious physical and financial toll. So what drove me away from the "dream" and towards voluntary servitude? The recession, I guess... it was a rough couple years there to be a freelancer. Of course, as soon as I moved to Lex all kinds of good rigging work opened up... but at that point, the deal was already inked in blood.

The only thing holding me back from living the dream is four spots on the 60 day scoreboard. And dealing with whoneedsfeet.

I'm almost there. I would say it would be different for everyone.
I'm a simple man and do not need much to make me happy.. For years I have dreamed of living near the RRG.. My wife and I just bought land near the PMRP,and will be building home soon. With climbing on our land this will be great place to grow old. Our youngest of 3 daughters will be off to college in 5 years. My kids are the first on both sides to ever go beyond high school..
Our home will be built and paid for by then.. I don't think it could have worked out much better... My wife and I chilling in the red getting old.. I'll take it !!!
It's a far cry from the drug addicted, wellfare living parents my wife and I came from..
