Vote on this route!

Post by ray »

Everyone came up with a great idea last week to change the current star rating system for routes to 5 stars instead of 3.

I've put in place, on each route page, a way to vote on a route from 1 to 5. After enough statistics are gathered, we can begin to change the true stars to what the votes reflect. This will be better than one person's opinion.

Vote away. Thanks for the great idea everyone.

the poll system is kick-ass ray!

i tried to vote, but it's really hard with the 5 star system. what's the difference between a 3 and 4 star route? also, you don't have a 0 star option. personally, i like the 3 star system the best. other than that, good work on making the online guidebook even more homosexually friendly!

Thanks man.
Well, as far as 0 stars, just don't vote. That equals 0 stars. I'm just taking the sum of the stars divided by the total votes. The only way to do better than not voting would be for me to have an option to decrement the sum. That would be kinda wierd.

I used 5 stars because in the thread about Defy The Laws everyone decided it would be better than trying to categorize a route into only a 3 star system. Many guidebooks are using the 5 star system so I thought we could do the same.

I'm not sure what the difference between a 3 and 4 star route would be. The stars don't really have a meaning other than how much you like the route. The stars could have different meanings for everyone. For example, John Bronaugh may give a route 5 stars if it is long. However, you may not care if a route is long or not so your 5 stars could mean it had the coolest moves in the world.

I updated the voting process so that each user can vote only once on a route. In order for these changes to take effect I had to clear the table so anyone who voted today will have to do so again.

Think of 3 as your average everyday Red route, like the easy stuff at Fortress, so 2 is not as good and one hardly worth it, 4 is better than usual, and 5 stellar, like Autumn.

I just finished rating the routes I have sent. Very cool feature. This can really show the power of the internet for good. POWER TO THE PEOPLE!

I kinda used this system:

5 ultra classic - there is no better route then this at the grade/type of climb
4 Super classic - excellant rock, good moves.
3 good - Ok routes, nothing great, but not bad
2 less then good
1 bad

Here is my definitions on the 5 * system...

Cool update Ray...when I've got a bunch of spare time I'll go in and vote on the routes I have done.

* - Total pile, waste of time and/or hardwear.(Ex. Hoky Pals, sorry Johnny )
** - Fair climb, only worth doing after you've done the 3,4&5 * lines at that
particular crag. (Ex. Any of the Poopy Head climbs @ Torrent take your
pick )
*** - Average climb...good rock quality, but nothing to write home about.
(Ex. Diamond in the Rough, Minimum Creep, Loosen Up, G.I.)
**** - Great climb... (Ex. AWOL, DEFY, Super Dario, Subatomic Fingerlock, Seek
the Truth)
***** - Gorge Classic! (Ex. Bare Metal Teen, Rock Wars, Twinkie, Roadside
Attraction)

I can't wait to see the results.
Lest we all forget... climbing is a mostly meaningless pursuit that we do for fun.

We and P2U - Why should a "total pile" or "bad" route get a star?

Yeah, I think the 5-star should be treated like other ratings of the sort (hotels, movies, restaurants). There is no "0" rating, but more a:

1-Not worth doing for anything BUT a warm-up
2-So-so, maybe just has one good move and can get boring.
3-Average, couple moves, or semi-interesting features, overall worth doing
4-Cool route, definitely worth doing for technical moves, flow, scenery.
5-kick ass, multiple killer moves, good length, keeps interest throughout, very fun and awesome climb for the grade.

I guess you could add a "0" rating, where, since no points were added to the score, but a "choice" was, the overall rating would decrease even more. A "0" would be a "this route sucks donkey scrotum. The holds break routinely, it's boring as all hell, mossy, nothing good or interesting about it at all and I'm pissed I even wasted my time putting my hand on this rock."

Not many climbs would get a "0", but those who feel it warrants having the bolts removed would have there say. :)

I don't think someone could nail down a "no better route for grade" though, Wes, because then you'd have to climb every route of that grade before one could vote on it, but I agree with your general train of thought).
