What's the shortest way from LAredo?
I'm driving all the way from Mexico city to the Red River Gorge. It's my first time in the US so I dont know my way around. Does someone know what's the shortest, fastest way from laredo? Are There any good spots on the way to stay overnight and maybe climb a bit? Thanks

You can take interstates most of the way. I-35 to Dallas, then East on I-30, then I-40, north from Nashville on 65, then East on 64.
Depending on how much time you've got, there is plenty of good climbing around Austin, TX (3.5 hrs from Laredo). You could also detour a couple hours out of the way and hit up some Arkansas crags, but it would seem silly to me to take time to climb at Horseshoe Canyon, rather than beelining it to the Red.

Google maps is your friend... Looks like you drive right through Nashville, TN. I would make the short detour and check out the Obed for a couple days. Just as fun as the Red and none of the crowds, although it is kinda close to the Red so doesn't do much to break up your drive.

I was just in Obed a couple weeks ago... VERY crowded. Hoe's and bro's with hammocks jammin' to shitty music, top-roping/hangdoging all over the place. The climbing wasn't nearly as good as what the Red has to offer either, not even close. You could fit all the routes at Obed/Clear Creek into the PMRP, which is only a small section of the Red. Don't waste your time. Although the scenery was quite nice, it's not a destination crag in my opinion.EricDorsey wrote:http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

Miles of killer limestone along the Pecos and Lake Amistad close to Del Rio.... just go there!
Re: What's the shortest way from LAredo?
Obed is ten times better than the Red and the New is 12.5 times better.
Positive vibes brah...positive vibes.

Yosemite comes in at 15.73 times better, with a 95% confidence interval of 3.5x.

The Obed sux. Don't waste your time.

En serio, if you are dead-set on driving all the way to the Red along with every other climber brah in North America, then you should definitely stop off at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch (Arkansas), Horsepens 40/Stone Fort/Rocktown (Chattanooga, Tennessee area bouldering; lots of good sport and trad around there too), and maybe the Obed if you want to check out some crazy-long horizontal roof climbs. Rumbling Bald, Looking Glass, and other areas in North Carolina also recommended, as is the New River Gorge (West Virginia). The climbing in all of these places is easily as good as the Red, but without the insane crowds of this place in spring and fall.
And have you already climbed out El Salto, La Chonta, Huasteca, and Potrero?? Now those are some real destinations man!!
