Busted @ Summersville Lake

Post by Josephine »

Watched people cliff jumping despite the ban at Summersville Lake Pirate's Cove area Monday. Then watched the Army Corps of Engineers patrol boat pull up and arrest 3 of them. They called someone on their radio to figure out which three were the last 3 to jump. Not sure where they were watching from. Some of the others in their group said "watch out for the red boat" but I didn't see a red boat either. Anyway, the unlucky 3 were carted off in the patrol boat.

I don't know if they're busting people for deep water soloing, but if you go - don't jump!

I'm glad you weren't busted!

Its complete bullshit but we're stuck living with it. I rarely go to Grayson lake anymore because of it, last time out made it about two hours of climbing before enforcement showed up.

Bummer!

Does anyone know who would be the right people to contact (en masse, petition-style) in order to revisit this issue? Climbers are numerous, and are usually willing to provide support for access issues like this (especially in a public place).

The Army Core is sort of able to make their own rules, and it's a federal (nationwide) agency.. so State officials are probably not the ones to contact. Who, then? Anyone have any ideas?

The bottom line message is: This rule costs local businesses a lot of money. Summersville, in particular, is a destination ofworldwide renown for DWS. And the kicker, is that DWS is not prone to injury like drunken cliff jumping is.

"drunken" is the optimal word. and that is and has always been illegal on Army Core property.

The more I think about it, the more it irks me. Summersville Lake is the best DWS location in the USA. Banning it there is like banning rock climbing from Yosemite. We should all be more pissed about this..

Ive still never heard of someone getting in trouble for DWS. Josi saw cliff jumpers getting arrested if I'm not mistaken
