Q: How far from the Red do you have to go to escape the crowds?
Wyoming should be far enough.
Has anyone been to Ten Sleep? Got any good beta? I've heard a lot of praise for the place. Planning on doing it in early July for two weeks or so. Anything I should know? Thanks!
Ten Sleep, anyone?
Re: Ten Sleep, anyone?
Carry both hot and cold clothes everywhere you go climbing. Also, it gets chilly at night, and the wind blows pretty steady as the cool night air flows down the canyon. I would say it got down in the 30's or so, but it warmed up fast in the morning. The cliffs were easy to find, and the climbs were all really good, sorta like Eastern Sky Bridge in general, except more pockety. The bolts were all pretty close together compared to lots of crags around here, and they bolted cracks out there too (I am guessing not too many people wanted to make the long, uphill hikes with trad racks).
Also, down at the bottom of the canyon there was a really good pizza place and also a coffee shop that served up really good food via a really cute hippie chick.

efil lanrete... i enjoy the sound, but in truth i find this seductively backward idea to be quite frightening
Re: Ten Sleep, anyone?
I love Ten Sleep. If you like the idea of vertical and slightly overhanging limestone pockets (with the occasional super steep bulge), this place is amazing. I spent at least 2 weeks there every July from 2005-2007. It actually looks like I'll be there for a couple of weeks this July, as well...maybe I'll see you there. The majority of the climbing is in the shade after noon, so it makes for lazy mornings, followed by perfect Summer temps until sundown. The guidebook is the most amusing guidebook ever written. ("5 stars = If you don't do this route you hate America, and your mother.")
It's been a few years since I've been, but I'm sure not too much has changed, so hit me up with a PM if you wanna talk details...

If you want to escape crowds of Co. climbers with attitude arrive
Ten Sleep after 4th July Weekend.
Also stock up on anything you may need before arriving in Ten Sleep.
Very limited shopping in TS.
Free camping along old highway, less bugs than national forest camping
higher up the new highway.
The canyon is at the base of the Big Horn Mts. so weather does set in
from time to time.
Be sure to go....it's good.

Good climbing, but like robert birchell says arrive after the 4th if you are looking to avoid crowds. We were there on the 4th last year and it was basically Boulder-North for the whole weekend.

Just moved to Cody, Wyo., and people here say it's THE place to go for sport. I have yet to go myself since I haven't found a partner and it's still snowing, but I'm looking forward to it. And if you want to change things up, Cody is about 1.5hrs northwest and has some good, ample sandstone/dolomite bouldering just on the edge of town.

Re: Ten Sleep, anyone?
The one bonus of being in Ten Sleep over the 4th is the annual celebration they have. Hanging with the locals at the rodeo or street dance is a great way to spend a day.

This is for those who haven't seen Ten Sleep. We were on a rest day at Devil's Tower and drove over here. I don't think this is even the climbing area just one of the pull offs along the highway. The place seems to go on forever.
Here's one for the history fans in the crowd.
