Tape on your harness

Post by pigsteak »

Since I am cheap, within the first year of buying a harness, I put athletic tape on the tie in points to reduce wear. Just the stuff experts and gumballs use to tape their fingers. Anyway, does anyone have any idea if the adhesive in the tape is safe for the nylon hareness. I just retaped a harness today and that stuff is super sticky when you remove the old.

Don't risk it. wrap the first layer sticky side up then the 2nd sticky side down.

Tape could have some type of corrosives in it that would eat through the nylon over a certain time frame.

The real reason to not cover up anything on your harness is because you can't inspect it.

Probably fine either way.

For me, I just get a new harness. My life is worth way more than the $.

but see, I wrap the tape before the wear shows up on the harness, and then I am just inspecting the tape...when it wears, I wrap a new layer. quite brilliant if you ask me.

I've had to tape my gear loops back to my harness...(chimneys) taping them beforehand seems like a better idea.

Madrock has these harnesses that have tubing already on the harness at the belay loop. The belay look isn't in tubing though.

A buddy of mine in WV used to get cordage and make a double belay loop with it...then put good ol duck tape over the tie in points....he had the same harness for 16 years....

For christmas one year I bought him a new one...he has since dispenced with the duck tape but still backs up the belay loop with full strength cordage.

...and yes...I meant "duck tape"...as opposed to "duct tape" (I mean I did live in WV for a few years.)
