this is a piece that i wrote for school... im kind of trying to get it submited into a climbing magazine:

In This Moment

By: Nathan Presley

My grip is solid but one slip will make all my hard work go to waste. My feet are planted but if they give way, I’m sure to tumble into an endless pit of disappointment. My mind is focused, but if I do not concentrate I will never taste the sweetness of success. I glance down towards the sixty foot drop, thinking of the horrible things that could happen if my rope gave way. My hands begin to sweat. I reach with one hand towards the back of my hip and shake up the chalk, which gives me a better grip on the worn hold. My graceful ascent is put on standby due to this slimy, insufficient, roadblock of a hold. The pain starts to seep deep within my fingers, forearms and legs. Let the mind games begin.

My thoughts become distracted. For a brief moment my goal is lost in the cries of my physical body. “My hands are slipping! My arms are tired! Why is it so hot?â€

This would be much better if you threw in some climbing grades to spray everyone down with.

You should really start it with this. "I know that everyone who will read the following will have no clue how gnar climbing 5.14 is, but please allow me to drench you in my subtle spray"

Weird stuff to me. With that kind of attitude you're going to have about a three-year career in climbing.

Wallace Stegner wrote:(Your essay) is all about your feelings and sensations, and those don't communicate well to a reader. He half feels you indulging a sort of yeasty nature mysticism, and he has no way to join you in it because you give him nothing concrete enough to see or smell or touch or hear...

You come at us emotion-first. You try to evoke the emotions without ever giving us the particular place, picture, actions, sense impressions, that might let us feel as you do. Does this mean anything to you?
