I've done a lot of AR ranging from sprint events (8-12 hr) to multi-day events. Which one are you looking at?

Probably the most organized, best put-together races in the region are in Michigan.

For beginners, Infiterra Sports ( http://www.infiterrasports.com ) puts on three shorter sprint races, the March Madness, the Spring Fury (which also has an elite race version) and the Summer Quest. They also put on longer races, up to 4 days. The MIX, their expedition race, is the best 4 days you'll ever have without sleep! Infiterra has great sponsorship, pre-race swag is ample, as is the post race food and prizes.

Grand Rapids Area Adventure Racing ( http://www.graar.org ) also puts on two great beginner races, the Spring and Fall Adventure Challenges. Both of these organizations pay a great deal of attention to the details. I would recommend anybody who wants to get into AR to try their races.

In Kentucky, Bonk Hard Racing ( http://www.bonkhardracing.com ) does the Land Between the Lakes race. It is has 12 and 24 hour versions. I've done the 24 hour version, not really made for beginners, not sure if the 12 hour version is or not. Bonk Hard is pretty well organized and puts on a decent product. Not quite as high quality as Infiterra or GRAAR, but pretty darn good.

Also in Kentucky is the FIG and The Sheltowee Extreme, both put on by flying squirrel. I've only done one of their races, the FIG a couple of years ago. It was a great course, but very poor organization. It started late, the course was not vettedd properly for the time, awards and swag was the most limited for any race of that length I've ever done. In addition, because it is a USARA qualifying event, you have to buy a USARA license, EVEN IF YOU ARE RACING IN A NON-USARA DIVISION!That being said, I think it was among the first times that person had put on a race of such magnitude, so I'll probably give it another go at some point in the future.

East of here, Odessey Adventure Racing ( http://www.oarevents.com ) puts on races in West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina. There races are NOT for beginners. They require far more than just being in shape to paddle, run, and ride, you MUST have a strong navigator to do their races. But they are a BLAST! GREAT courses, great organization to the races.

The short version --> http://www.checkpointzero.com is a great AR news source and they put on the "Checkpoint Tracker Series".

If you are in Ohio and don't want to travel much...

http://www.race-coar.com/ - great sprint race series all summer
http://www.nsfadventures.com/ - mostly do navigational events but one AR a year
http://www.topoadventuresports.org/ - one great AR in the fall

The FIG at the RRG (http://www.racethefig.com) is a great race but not for the beginner.

**Spray alert**
I am doing the Mission 18hr in two weeks! (http://www.dinoseries.com/mission.html)
